Riding the waves
2008 « Riding the waves »
2,44 m x 1,50 m, 100% wool felt with local dog hair!
Artist’s residence of 7 days where a large format felt artwork was created for and with the Dene community of Fort Simpson. This initiative took place as part of
The Canadian Year of the Arts and Crafts at the Open Sky Creative Festival in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, Canada.
The inspiration for this felt creation comes directly from the environment of Fort Simpson (confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard Rivers) and its history. It represents the environmental and social challenges that are coming to the new generations who are learning how to cope with the “waves” of change in spite of themselves, with all support and guidance that reinforces one’s identity and allows harmonious growth.
This piece particularly honours intergenerational and cultural links that make up the richness of a community.
“The regenerative forces are constantly flowing for the benefit of all our relations ».
